Ryan and Jeffrey running a live training workshop
JF SELF DEFENSE/TRAINERS

Three operators.
Forty years of work,
between us.

Every class runs the same five-step hierarchy. What changes is the voice, the drill, and the body in front of the student.

Jeffrey Fleury

FOUNDER · MASTER TRAINER

1991 — present · Singapore

"When you have to fight, fight to win."

Jeffrey Fleury has been in the security industry for more than 33 years, of which 11 years were with the Singapore Police Force. He received the prestigious Long Service and Good Conduct Medal when he left.

He holds a specialised security science degree apart from other international security accreditations. He is an International Crime Prevention Specialist (ICPS) and a Certified Supply Chain Security Specialist (CSCSS). He has served as the Country and Regional Security Manager for established multinational companies for over 22 years, with security coverage and responsibilities spanning the Asia Pacific region — including Japan and Australia.

With regards to martial arts and other forms of combat training, Jeffrey has been involved with the arts for about 30 years. He holds black belts in Hapkido and Hanmudo and is versed in various other forms of martial arts and self-defense techniques. In 2018, he trained with knife combat expert Jim Wagner in Vancouver, Canada, and obtained his certification as a Knife Survival Expert Instructor.

What makes JF Self Defense different from other martial arts schools is what Jeffrey brings into the room — three decades of operator field experience, not just mat hours. The same situational reads that worked on the street, on protective details, in convoy and crowd management, become the curriculum. Civilians walk out with the same decision tools an operator uses, scaled to the situations they actually face.

The self-defense techniques he teaches are simple, direct and applicable. He believes that if you have to use physical self-defense you are already in damage-control mode. The best self-defense is improved self-awareness — not putting yourself in harm's way in the first place, so you are less likely to be selected as a target. The next best is to avoid the fight when one materialises. When neither avenue is left, you need to know how to fight to win.

That is why his workshops emphasise the soft skills first — posturing, communications, distance management — to prevent escalation into the physical stage whenever possible. Jeffrey has conducted programmes for multinational companies, schools, banks, aesthetic clinics and legal firms, in addition to the ongoing self-defence classes run from the JF studio on King George's Avenue. Most students arrive looking for technique. They leave with judgment.

Ryan Fleury

CO-INSTRUCTOR · CONDITIONING LEAD

Co-founder, JF system · Founder, RF Transformation

"Transform. Educate. Empower."

Ryan trains clients from all walks of life — university students, stay-home mothers, working professionals, CEOs. The people who walk into RF Transformation Academy or onto the JF mat aren't athletes with two free hours a day. They are people with offices, commutes, mortgages, kids. Ryan's job is to design the work to fit the life around it, not the other way around — short sessions, honest programming, nutrition that survives a takeaway lunch.

He grew up inside the system his father built. He has been on the mat since he could walk a straight line, served a combat-role national service in the Army and Air Force, and earned his BSc in Sport & Exercise Sciences. Outside the JF curriculum he founded RF Transformation Academy — a holistic system for sustainable body transformation covering strength, mobility, recovery, and nutrition (he is a Certified Nutritional Therapist, HSA Level 5). He has been featured on Bidvine UK as a top personal trainer.

On the JF mat Ryan runs the conditioning and movement tracks — the foundations every other technique sits on top of. Footwork, breath control, the burst-and-escape principle, the strikes that still work when the heart rate is at 180. Where Jeffrey teaches you to read the situation, Ryan trains the body that can act on the read.

ASSISTANT COACH

Ten years a student. One year a coach.

"The decision tree, above all of it."

Chia Wei walked through the door as a Muay Thai and Aikido practitioner ten years ago, looking for the missing piece between those two systems. He found it in Jeffrey's curriculum: the layer above technique, the decision tree that comes before the strike.

Today he runs warm-up rotations, assists with drills, and helps newer students through the first weeks of orientation — the period where the distance between "I don't understand any of this" and "this is the only sensible way to teach it" is shortest if you have a coach who remembers being there.

The same system, in three voices.
The most experienced operator in the room
will always be Jeffrey. The doors are open anyway.
